Speaking exclusively to Hello! from his secret wedding, former Generation Game host Jim Davidson, 55, is no stranger to the alter with this being his fifth trip up the aisle. However, Jim really believes this time is the last. “Being married to me is not like joining an exclusive club,” he admits Jim. “I thought I’d look foolish if I stood there and said, ‘I’m very much in love, I can’t live without Michelle and this time it’s for keeps.’ But deep down, that was what I was really, really thinking.”
The couple have been together for the past eight years and Michelle, who wore white, has actually been married before too. “Everyone has a past and I don’t think about being his fifth wife,” she says. “The important thing is that we wanted to be together, and we wanted to share our celebration with family and close friends.”
Jim and Michelle now live in Dubai, but thought it was important to hold the ceremony in their native England. They married in Maidenhead Register Office on a Friday (18 September), then enjoyed a blessing in a friend’s country mansion in Hertfordshire the following day. There was a diverse guest list at the blessing, from comedian Bobby Davro to senior representatives from the Armed Forces, as Jim is the founder of the British Forces Foundation. Also at the blessing were Jim’s five children from previous marriages, and his granddaughter Tilly.
The happy couple made the decision to wed just five weeks before the big day. Jim had been on tour in Australia, while Michelle was back home in Dubai. “I was very lonely and fed up,” Jim explains. “So I texted her and said, ‘What about getting married’ and she texted back, ‘Okay’. I just thought, ‘What security could I offer the woman I love more than anyone else in the world?” After his last marriage ended in 1997, Jim vowed: “Never again”. So what changed his mind? “I just thought, ‘Let’s do it,’” he says. “And it saves her running off with someone young and handsome!” On a more serious note, he adds: “It feels like a new chapter.”
After the ceremony, Bobby Davro ad libbed a ‘reading’. He quoted lines from a housewives’ manual from the 1950s and joked about the groom’s past. “Jim asked me if he could borrow 10p to call his ex wife,” he said. “I replied, ‘Have 50p and call all of them.’” Afterwards, guests enjoyed a four-course meal that had been largely supervised by Jim, a former contestant in ITV1’s Hell’s Kitchen. “This is what happens when you do TV programmes with Marco Pierre White,” he says. “It means I could do the catering for 90 people at my own wedding.”
