Designer profile: Sarah Arnett

She’s fast become known as the mistress of slink - her body-skimming bridal gowns have instant sex appeal

Graduating from the University of Brighton in 1990, Sarah originally trained in woven textiles. She then went to work for various fashion and textile companies in the UK, Switzerland and India before establishing herself as freelance textile designer. Through her agent, Helena Gavshon, she created designs for brands such as Anthropology, Calvin Klein and Tracey Boyd.
Sarah started her own company in 2003, along with her business partner Simon Beales. Originally a store called Simultane, the wholesale business began in Autumn/Winter 06 with bridal launching a year later. Her ready-to-wear collection now sells in over 100 stores worldwide including Harvey Nichols and Fenwick. Sarah Arnett Bride is available in 20 stores in the UK, Ireland and USA.

A childhood growing up in Africa and Sarah’s love of gardening and botanical gardens is key to her work. Regular visits to places like The Lost Gardens of Helligan, Trebah and The Eden project, mixed with a love of film, books and travel, all influence and contribute to her distinctive, signature designs.
Studying and interpreting flowers, foliage, land and skyscapes are the starting point of each ready-to-wear collection. Sarah’s prints are hand-drawn and then digitally illustrated. These images are then printed onto carefully selected fabrics, using the latest digital print technology. Sarah often creates individual engineered designs for her collection as well as colour washes and all over repeats.

Sarah Arnett Bride is influenced by texture and a mix of mat and satin fabrics with minimal embellishment. The play on light and the use of specialised sunray pleating, fine silks and tulles creates a sophisticated, modern yet classic collection.

Ideas and samples come together in Sarah’s Brighton studio with much help from a small and dedicated team. The collections are then sold through agencies and exhibitions In London, Paris, Munich and New York. All production is within the EU and Sarah Arnett Bride is made exclusively in the UK.
Increasingly the team are striving to reduce environmental impact through less wastage, improved logistics and selective fabric choices.

Sarah is an illustrator and print designer who creates beautiful dresses. However she is increasingly extending her skills into other areas. For example she has recently designed a rug in collaboration with Forty Thieves and wall coverings with Digitile . In the future, Sarah hopes to collaborate further in areas such as interiors, stationary and accessories.

Ultimately Sarah loves creating beautiful designs that reflect her inspirations and passions. Her hope is that her customers will share this passion with her and enjoy her work for many years to come - remembering the very first time they wore that beautiful dress!

Sarah’s new collection for s/s 2010, will be at BBEH in September – make a date now to see it. Call Atlantic Bridal on +44 (0) 1502 724333
